The right diet for every season

wild birdWild birds can be fed all year round. In the winter this helps the animals to survive and in the spring and summer it allows them to feed their young and recover from this hard task. It also offers the birds the opportunity to start building up reserves for the cold period to come or for their migration. .

In the summer, birds need less high-fat food as it is not as difficult for them to keep their body temperature up. So in the summer give them fewer fat balls and more vitamin-rich food. As well as scattering food, you can hang up some fruit, for example. Proteins are also very welcome, so that they can repair their plumage and body whilst preparing for the coming cold period. This could include mealworms, for example. When the winter period is beginning, more high-fat food can be provided, such as peanuts, sunflower seeds and fat balls.

robinHow do you recognise a robin?

Robins are easy to recognise with their round body with a red breast and a white/grey belly. They like to hop along on the ground.
They mainly eat insects, larvae, spiders, snails and worms. In the winter, they supplement this diet of insects with seeds, fruit and food remnants.

Robins are aggressive birds. They often fight with each other. As Robins are so strongly territorial, you rarely see two at the feed table at the same time.

How do I provide the best possible home?

wild bird

The autumn is an ideal period to hang up nest boxes. Hang them against the wall or against a smooth trunk. A location with a good view is important so the birds can see any danger coming. Nest boxes should ideally be hung in the shade, around two metres up.

Make sure that you also put out a dish of fresh drinking water, especially on hot days, so the birds can take in enough fluid and are able to take a cooling bath too.
