Squirrels are real omnivores

Image removed.

There are many different species of squirrel, each with their own requirements in terms of diet and housing.

Squirrels have a very easy dietary pattern but make sure you provide plenty of variety. A good menu for squirrels consists of a varied selection of seeds, nuts, fruit and vegetables, supplemented with vitamin chunks. Make sure they eat everything, so that they actually ingest all the nutrients.

Ensure that the squirrel is provided with the right type of fruit for its species. Tropical species can have all kinds of fruit. Hardy species can mainly eat hard fruit such as apples and pears. Other kinds of fruit give these squirrels stomach problems. To keep the squirrel's jaw in good condition, you can add harder nuts such as hazelnuts and twigs to their diet. Provide fresh drinking water every day too.

What should I definitely bear in mind when thinking about buying squirrels?

Image removed.

  1. Choose a squirrel that is tame or buy a squirrel that is between eight and 16 weeks old. At this age you can still tame them. When faced with danger they often stand stock still or run into a tree, zigzagging all the way.
  2. A squirrel is not a good choice for small children as, despite their cute appearance and soft bushy tail, they are not cuddly animals.
  3. Squirrels live either in trees (tree squirrels) or in burrows under the ground (ground squirrels). Squirrels are best kept in a large enclosure or aviary.
  4. Some types of squirrels are solitary while others live in groups. In both cases, provide multiple nest boxes, so that they can withdraw or hide.
  5. Squirrels are very active and move a lot. Change the arrangement of the squirrel's outdoor home often, so that they never get bored.

How do I make my squirrels as comfortable as possible?

Image removed.

Most squirrels are best kept outside in a large aviary, which is filled with twigs, trunks, hiding places and climbing ropes.

For tree squirrels, you must provide a high enclosure with plenty of climbing materials, such as twigs and ropes. Ground squirrels like digging, so replenish the ground covering regularly. Make sure that there is paving or mesh under the enclosure, otherwise it won't take your squirrel long to escape! Squirrels are also excellent gnawers, so make sure that the materials used in the enclosure are resistant to gnawing.
