The right diet for your parrot

A seed mix for large parrots is an excellent basis for most parrot species. Make sure that this includes tasty chunks with vitamins and minerals. An indispensable addition to this that is often forgotten is fresh fruit and vegetables. The quantity and types depend on the species of bird.

These birds should also be provided with regular concentrated food in their diet and should have unlimited access to grit.

How do I provide the best possible home for my parrots?

Parrots like a large home. A permanent position in the room is a must, but parrots also like to fly around the room freely. Choose the location in the room carefully, making sure that your parrot is included in family life. If you want to keep more than one parrot, they should ideally each have their own space. If you want to keep your parrots outside, make sure that they have a night shelter! Like a cat with a scratching post, you should also preferably find something to occupy your parrot. A java tree is a very beautiful and hard tree species which your bird will enjoy sitting on and chewing.

Cockatoos come from Australia and can be recognised by their crest. They are very social animals that need another cockatoo, otherwise there is a chance that they will develop behavioural problems. These are birds that can often be very active, especially when they are young. With patience and attention, cockatoos can become very tame. With the right care they can live to be 80 years old.

Cockatoos are susceptible to easily becoming overweight, which can be dangerous for their health so it is often better to give them food that contains less fat than normal parrot food, such as providing a mix for large parakeets as a basic diet.

Macaws are the biggest parrots in the world. There are 16 different species, of which the green-winged macaw and blue-and-yellow macaw are the best known. They are best kept in pairs in a large and solid home that is resistant to their strong beaks. It is important for macaws to be given extra nuts in addition to a good, coarse parrot mix. Preferably give them whole nuts, so they have to do something before they can eat. They should also be given fresh fruit and vegetables every day.

Eggs will only develop if the temperature is at least 15 degrees. The higher the temperature around the egg, the faster the young bird will develop in the egg. The humidity is also very important.

Young can be raised fully by the parents. They can get used to people once they have fledged. Hand rearing is another method which entails removing the young from the nest early, so that they come into contact with people immediately. The bird must be fed using a syringe or spoon. This is not recommended for inexperienced breeders.

Frequently asked questions

Can my parrot eat fresh fruit and vegetables?

In the wild, most parrot species eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, so giving them fresh fruit and vegetables is a great way to supplement your parrot’s diet. Wash everything thoroughly before you give it to them and vary the types of vegetable you give them. Don’t give them avocado as it is poisonous for birds.

My parrot doesn’t want to eat fresh vegetables or fruit. What should I do?

If your parrots are not used to it, it might take a while for them to try something new. Keep offering them fresh fruit and vegetables, even if they don’t eat it straightaway. You can even hang it somewhere, so that they become curious and try to find out what it is, or cut it into small pieces and mix into their feed so that they are more likely to pick up a piece. Of course, birds also have preferences and will like some tastes more than others!

My parrot only eats the sunflower seeds from its feed. What should I do?

Most parrots find that sunflower seeds are the tastiest ingredient in their feed, but they will get too fat and develop deficiencies if that is all they eat. Is your parrot leaving a lot of its feed behind? Try stirring the empty seed cases back into the feed and give it to your parrot again (as long as it’s still clean). You may need to add a small amount of fresh feed if there is not enough for one day.

Can I feed my parrot some of my own food?

Most of the food we eat is too salty, fatty, sweet or processed for birds (i.e. crisps, salted peanuts, biscuits etc.) so although most birds will gladly eat these, it’s best to treat them with a specific snack for birds.
