Would you like to find out more about breeding canaries?

In order to breed, canaries need a nest box for canaries and nesting material. If the canaries are used to each other, the female will build a nest and then lay three to five eggs. After a brooding period of about two weeks, the eggs will hatch. They will leave the nest after just six weeks and a few weeks later they will become independent.

Frequently asked questions

My canary eats a complete feed. Can I feed it extra egg food?

Of course! Most canaries love egg food, and it is also good for them as it is packed full of vitamins and minerals.

How many grams of food per day does a canary need?

For a canary in a cage, between 5-15g of food is usually sufficient. That’s about one teaspoonful! You can also give them some additional snacks from time to time.

My canary’s beak is a bit long. What can I do about it?

It might help to provide your canary with a mineral or grit block so that it can maintain its beak by pecking at it. The little stones it manages to dislodge help to support the digestive system and contain natural minerals.

Can my canary eat apple?

Of course, apples and other vegetables and fruits contain fresh vitamins and minerals so they are a healthy snack for canaries. Don’t give them avocado as this is poisonous to all birds.
